Qualitative Research
Providing insight into experiences and perspectives of patients, caregivers, clinicians, and communities, qualitative methods are a valuable approach for exploring complex healthcare dynamics.
These services are designed to meet researchers where they are—from the idea stage through dissemination—and to support trainees through senior investigators across disciplines.
Research design
Services include study conceptualization, aligning project design with research aims, and selecting appropriate qualitative methodologies. Our team ensures your study is methodologically rigorous, ethically sound, and feasible within the selected settings, including integration with mixed-methods or implementation science frameworks.
Moderator and interview guide development
We develop tailored interview and focus-group guides that are grounded in your objectives and are sensitive to clinical, cultural, and patient perspectives.
Data collection
We have expertise in:
- Providing guidance on sampling and recruitment/key considerations
- Focus groups, interviews, and observational and complementary forms of data collection via in-person, phone, and virtual formats
- Pediatric, adolescent and young adult (AYA), and geriatric populations, community and international settings
- Spanish language capacity
Data analysis
Our analysis is adapted to the individual needs of each project. Our expertise includes: Thematic analysis, framework analysis, rapid analysis, and discourse analysis utilizing multiple qualitative software applications. We demonstrate rigor and trustworthiness in every project.
Transcription and translation services
English-language transcription services are provided by an approved outside vendor, ADA Transcription (BAA signed and approved by Dana-Farber), at a rate of $134 (as of April 2026) per audio hour for single participant interviews.
Non-English language transcription and translation services are provided by an approved outside vendor, Multilingual Connections (BAA signed and approved by Dana-Farber). Rates vary by language.
Dissemination
We help translate findings into clear, compelling outputs tailored to different audiences, including academic manuscripts, conference presentations, policy briefs, and stakeholder reports.
Cognitive interviewing and pilot testing
We design and conduct cognitive interviews to explore how respondents understand, interpret, and answer your survey questions. Using techniques such as think-aloud and targeted probing, we identify confusing wording, ambiguous concepts, and potential sources of response error. Our team analyzes interview data to refine item wording, response options, and survey structure for improved clarity and validity. We provide a concise report and work with teams to identify recommended revisions for your survey instrument.
Training & capacity building
We offer training, workshops, and mentoring to build your team’s skills in design, data collection, analysis, and reporting. In addition, we can support applications, manuscripts, and stakeholder reports that clearly communicate qualitative procedures and findings to academic, policy, and practice audiences.
